| 1948 | Congress approves $13 million dollars to build two "international type" airports in Anchorage and Fairbanks. |
| 1951 | Airfield operations start with an 8,400 foot east/west and a 5,000 foot north/south runway. |
| 1952 | Construction of the first terminal begins. |
| 1953 | Anchorage International Airport officially opens. |
| 1960 | The original 8,400 foot east/west runway is extended to 10,600 feet. |
| 1964 | North America's largest earthquake (magnitude 9.2) collapses the main control tower on March 27, 1964. The Lake Hood tower takes over unti a new Anchorage control tower can be built. |
| 1966 | The International Hexagon Terminal, called "the Hex' comes online. |
| 1969 | Got rid of the gravel strip on the south side of the lakes. |
| 1975 | Another channel is dredged between Lake Hood and Lake Spenard. Five tie-down channels (called "The Fingers") are constructed. |
